Gulf Live: OS remains unbeaten with 35-0 thrashing of Biloxi

OCEAN SPRINGS, Mississippi -- After a 35-0 romp past visiting Biloxi, the Ocean Springs Greyhounds’ offense is averaging 42.3 points per game, while the defense is allowing 19.2.

Having an offense which scores twice as many points as your defense allows would seem to be a good way to win football games.

That formula has led Ocean Springs to a 6-0 mark after the win versus the Indians, played on Thursday night to avoid conflict with the Cruisin’ the Coast “Sock Hop” in downtown Ocean Springs Friday night. More importantly, the Greyhounds moved to 3-0 in Region 4-6A and remain in a tie for first place in the region with Gulfport and Harrison Central after those two teams defeated Pascagoula and St. Martin, respectively, Friday night.

Early on, Thursday’s night game bore a strong resemblance to last week’s 42-14 win over D’Iberville, with Biloxi turning the ball over and Ocean Springs cashing in with touchdowns. And the Indians wasted no time in gifting one to the ‘Hounds, muffing the opening kickoff and Ocean Springs recovering at the Indians 34-year line.

Two plays later, quarterback Bray Hubbard found Holton White wide open over the middle for a 22-yard touchdown pass. Bart Edmiston added the point after and it was 7-0 Greyhounds before the late arrivals had even found a parking spot.

Each of the Greyhounds first half possessions ended in Biloxi territory, although twice the drives would end with Hubbard being intercepted. But it mattered little -- three times Biloxi moved into the Greyhounds end of the field, only to be turned away empty handed, twice with turnovers (fumble, interception).

Ocean Springs would post its second score early in the second quarter on a 1-yard run by Hubbard, capping an 80-yard drive powered largely by a 35-yard run by David Humphries, who had a monster game with 231 rushing yards on 22 carries, averaging nearly 11 yards per attempt.

On Biloxi’s ensuing possession, quarterback Deljay Bailey was intercepted by the Greyhounds’ Tommy Carter at the Indian 42, setting up another Hubbard touchdown pass to Holton White, this one from 15 yards out, as Ocean Springs built a 21-0 halftime lead and never looked back.

Ocean Springs would add two more scores in the second half on another Hubbard-to-White hookup and a 19-yard run by Hubbard to close out the scoring.

In addition to Humphries’ outstanding game, Hubbard accounted for 231 yards and five touchdowns -- three passing, two rushing -- and two interceptions. All three of Hubbard’s scoring tosses were to White, who finished with seven catches for 98 yards and the three scores. The Greyhound amassed 507 yards in total offese, including 359 on the ground.

The Greyhounds will travel to face Pascagoula next Friday before hosting St. Martin. While Ocean Springs will obviously want to be careful not to look past the next two opponents, the games with the Admirals and Red Rebels are on the horizon. They are the last two games of the regular season -- both on the road.

Biloxi fell to 1-5 overall and 0-3 in the region. The Indians will travel to St. Martin next Friday.
